They come out in the middle and are waiting for the next command. The slightest leg pressure can literally send them into a spin. And it is all done on a loose rein and normally one-handed.”

Rob continued, “Most riders can go out and do a 1A dressage test and most reiners would fumble their way through a dressage test. But the converse does not hold. Dressage horses and riders could not do a reining pattern. They can’t do the sliding stops, they are not going to spin like they are meant to spin and you won’t be able to control them one-handed. You can pick up contact on a reiner but you can’t throw the reins away at a dressage horse.“
"Like everything, the good riders make it look easy. You are lulled into a false sense of security. But it is a lot more difficult than it looks and takes years of training. I used to think that I would be spinning and sliding within weeks, but it has taken years. Many riders give up because of the hours of training required. They get demoralised with their low scores and end up switching to cow-horse."

"I have competed in a number of other disciplines in the past, but reining is a real adrenalin rush! It is sort of like the adrenalin of cross-country and show jumping combined with the technical complexity of high-level dressage. It is about having a horse that you guide one-handed. It requires a lot of attention to detail. I enjoy the adrenalin, but for me, the most important thing is the connection with the horse."

. This foal lopes around the paddock and as it slows down she wants to slide. She naturally wants to slideback and turn. These horses are so purpose bred these days. They are just bred to do it. That I find remarkable. But probably not surprising, given we see similar cadence characteristics in dressage foals with no training.

Yellowstone is set on the fictitious Montana (US) cattle ranch of the same name sometime in the recent past. The series follows the fortunes of the Dutton Family and the misfortunes of most that they encounter as they try and manoeuvre their way through a changing world. It is the Wild West for modern times. A sort of Dynasty meets Underbelly meets Game Of Thrones with horses. The series showcases the seductive cowboy lifestyle beyond the Rule of Law. Cowboy life, where, like the ranch itself, life has no boundaries.

The technique recently came into spotlight with the below fetlock amputation/prosthesis of well-known US Quarter Horse stallion Triple Vodka. The stallion had the surgery in February 2021 after he failed to respond to treatment for an infected coffin joint.

Vlados performs the amputations on both front and hind legs. Most equine amputations are performed at the fetlock level or below, but some have been performed at mid-cannon bone, and rarely at the mid-radius.

“It's been a slow process to get it accepted, but the horses really do so well,” Vlahos is quoted as saying in a recent interview with the Paulick Report. “I'm pleased that other vets across the world are starting to recognize it as a viable option. When I'm helping other surgeons with the procedure, I routinely hear, 'Why haven't we been doing this before today?'”

Bob Dylan is regarded as one of the greatest songwriters of all time but was also a keen horseman.

There is not much information about Dylan’s equestrian pursuits, but there are plenty of photos of him engaging in equestrian activities both on and off the screen (Dylan played a number of western/cowboy characters in his punctuated film career).

Dylan has been a major figure in popular culture during a career spanning nearly 60 years. Much of his most celebrated work dates from the 1960s, when songs such as "

: It is worth a listen for its sheer unusualness.

For one of the greatest lyrists of the decade, the song has been described by some popular culture gurus as a "cop out" and Rolling Stones Magazine reviewed the whole album with the headline “What is this s—t?”. The song was used in the 2001 film Blow.

The lyrics hint at meaning but defy interpretation. Perhaps “riding” is a metaphor for a wearied Dylan’s “writing”. Repetition gives the two lines a strange power and the song has a hypnotic gospel-type feel. All The Tired Horses has been described by one critic as “enough to lure sailors to their deaths” and it frequently appears on lists as one of the ten worst songs of all time. Presumably, because it is benchmarked against Dylan’s other works.

Popular culture magazine Mojo described Dylan’s most recent album Rough And Rowdy Ways, released in February last year and Dylan's first in eight years, as a “vaccine against culture’s shrinking expectations”. Dylan is now 81years old.

Big Jake, the world’s tallest horse, died in late June aged 20 years old. The Belgian Draft stood 20.2hh (210.19cm). The life expectancy for a Belgian Draft horse is normally about 18 years. The chestnut lived at Smokey Hollow Farm in Wisconsin, USA, where he was a major tourist attraction.

The world record for the tallest horse ever measured was 21.25hh (220cm) and is held by a horse named Sampson, a Shire born in 1846 in Bedfordshire, England. He weighed 1524kg! At 1.5% of bodyweight, that is a bale of hay per day!

Ariarne Titmus, The Girl on the grey pony

The girl on the grey pony is none other than Australian 2020(-1) Olympic hero Ariarne Titmus.

Ariarne won gold medals in both the 200m and 400m freestyle at her first attempt at the Olympics last month.

But Ariarne is no fish out of water when it comes to horses. She grew up riding ponies on her family farm near Launceston in Tasmania and competed at dressage and show jumping from the age of seven.

Titmus recently declared that “horse riding was her first love” and that horse riding taught her to be “calm and focused” and that she “loves the connection that you can make with a horse”.

Ariarne also mentioned in one radio interview that she hoped she may one day compete at the Olympics as an equestrian after her swimming career has finished. Not out of the question, given that she is only 21yo and Australia’s two oldest Olympians in Tokyo were equestrians Mary Hanna (66yo- dressage) and Andrew Hoy (62yo – eventing).

Tokyo teammate, backstroker Emily Seebohm (bronze) is also a keen equestrian and suffered an injury in the lead up to the Olympics after falling off her horse.

Ariarne was recently announced as the official ambassador for the 2021 Lexus Melbourne Cup Day.

In the first of our series on The Mentors, WA equine veterinarian Dr Deryck Tan explains how he manages to balance his work commitments with daily helpings of family, nature, adventure, cooking and art.

WA equine veterinarian Dr Deryck Tan is certainly not your average horse vet. He is a practitioner of the ancient Japanese Samurai art of Gyotaku or fish printing. He recently opened a commercial gallery to sell his paintings. He is also an avid kayaker, freediver. orchardist, nature-lover, sustainable (spear) fisherman and chef. His catches are both the centrepiece of his canvas and plate.
Deryck was born and raised in Malaysia, graduated in veterinary science from Murdoch in 1995, worked as a regulatory and racetrack veterinarian for the Singapore Turf Club, returned to Australia and established the Valley Equine Veterinary Centre in the beautiful Swan Valley (WA) and became an ANZCVS specialist in equine dentistry.
Randlab’s Alex Macpherson renewed an old friendship with Deryck and recently Zoomed in to find out more about his fascinating life and eclectic hobbies which blend seamlessly into his lifestyle. Alex ended up buying one of Deryck’s gyotaku octopus paintings.

John is a hobby breeder who maintains one or two mares to breed from. He bought Phobetor's dam Oneforall on an online auction for $2500. Phobetor (by Dream Ahead) was her third foal and has now had 12 starts for 7 wins and a second and over $400K in prizemoney. He is now being touted as a possible Everest candidate.

Congratulations to Randlab's Queensland Manager Andrew Grant for putting together an informative afternoon of CPD lectures followed by dinner last Friday in Brisbane.
From all reports it was an outstanding afternoon/evening and much enjoyed by all that attended. Everyone welcomed the opportunity for some face-to-face CPD and collegial catchups. Plenty of hugs and laughter.
Following the cancellation of so many CPD events throughout the country, Randlab had planned to put on similar education evenings in each state. Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Tasmania have been put back on hold due to COVID restrictions. We are still planning a similar event for Perth for later this year.

The silver medal (eventing) winner at the Tokyo Games was bred by the team at Wyong Equine Clinic?

How good was it to see the Australian Eventing Team win the Silver medal in Tokyo!

Front and centre on the podium was Shane Rose, who along with his equine partner Virgil, also managed to finish a creditable 10th in the individual medal.

Virgil was bred by Wyong equine veterinarian Dr Brett Jones and his then partner Michelle Hasibar, with veterinarians Derek Major, Pete Tazawa and Rob Caska also having a hand (literally) in his conception.

Brett picked up Virgil’s dam North Pole from local trainer Steve Farley for “not much I don’t think” after a short and rather inglorious racing career.

“She seemed to have a nice trot and good temperament we thought she may make a good eventer for Michelle”, Brett said. Michelle Hasibar is a well-known event and show hack rider.

North Pole’s eventing career didn’t really take off and, in a snap decision, Michelle decided to put the mare in foal. Chris Chugg’s stallion Vivant was selected with Derek Major collecting the semen at Agnes Banks and Pete Tazawa AI’ing the mare. The mare dutifully went straight in foal.

North Pole foaled at Brett and Michelle’s property in 2005. Michelle named the ungainly leggy colt Virgil after The Thunderbirds TV character Virgil Tracy.

“He was always character, even as a foal”, Brett commented. “Somehow he got separated from his dam and managed to find his way under (Ed: or in retrospect was it over?) a fence when only a few hours old.” The horse is still renowned as an “escape artist” and for making surprise appearances having extricated himself from his stable or yard.

RIGHT: Jumping has always been Virgil's highpoint

Michelle eventually tried Virgil as an eventer and soon realised he was something special. Like many of Vivant’s progeny, he was difficult on the flat with a big jump. At 17.1hh he was a handful of horse that needed containment and a strong rider.

Virgil was sent to their good friend Shane Rose to trial and possibly on sell. Shane was quickly on the phone offering to buy half of the then four-year -old. Brett would also later sell his remaining percentage in Virgil to the Roses.

Brett recalls that Virgil’s defining moment was when he won the CCI2* (= current 3*) in Adelaide as a very green six-year-old. He remembers the crowd gasping in disbelief when he jumped the 2

The vocal adulation continued for the rest of the round as Virgil soared over the jumps. Coming to the last fence, Shane and Virgil had a “bit of a miss”. The horse virtually Fosbury flopped over the fence, but somehow managed not to touch a rail.

After the Adelaide event, the Virgil team received big offers for the horse as a showjumper, but as Brett said, “It wasn’t quite enough to retire on”. Shane was keen to retain the horse and continue to event him.

Virgil went on to become a consistent performer on both the Australian and European high end eventing circuits. He was reserve travelling horse for the 2016 Rio Olympics but did not get a run.
There were some anxious moments for Brett and the rest of the Virgil Team watching this year’s Tokyo Games on TV. Virgil’s dressage score initially being erroneously posted as 41. On a recount the correct score was found to be 31.7. He then set the tone on cross country by being one of the first of the day to clear under time. The horse was rated as the second-best showjumping horse in eventing at Tokyo, behind GBR's Toledo de Kersar (Gold team and Silver individual winner in Tokyo).
Despite his advancing age (16yo), Virgil’s star is still on the rise and Rose believes he still has plenty to offer. With a shortened period until the 2024 Paris Games, let's hope Team Virgil will be back for another shot at that Gold.

“At the end of the day, it is another good story for life after racing for the Thoroughbred industry”, Brett said. “North Pole was no good as a racehorse. Her form page has zero’s everywhere. She was also not much good as an eventer but went on to be the dam of a freak who won a Silver Medal at the Olympics. Many regard him as one of, if not the best of Vivant’s offspring and he is out of a thoroughbred mare.”

Halla'va Horse

Did you know that... The most decorated horse in the history of Olympic showjumping is a standardbred mare?

Halla, ridden by German Hans Gunter Winkler, is the only horse ever to win three Olympic Gold medals in showjumping. The mare and rider won the Gold in Individual and Team Jumping at the 1956 Stockholm Olympics and then went on to win gold again in Team Jumping at the 1960 Rome Olympics.

Halla was foaled in 1945 in Germany by the Standardbred stallion Oberst out of an unknown French trotting mare. She stood 16.2hh when competing.

Early in her career, Halla was considered talented but irritable and difficult to manage and changed riders several times before coming into the stable of Winkler.

Winkler sustained a severe injury in the first round of the jumping at the ’56 Olympics and was not even able to mount the mare unassisted. But such was the chemistry between horse and rider that Halla went on to basically jump the final round clear with Winkler just pointing and steering. In so doing, she won both the individual and team Gold medals.

Halla died at the age of 34 years as the world’s most decorated equine Olympian.

The three Agitos consists of three elements in red, blue and green – the three colours that are most widely represented in national flags around the world. The design signifies the four core values of the Paralympics: courage, determination, inspiration and equality.

The three Agitos (from the Latin meaning “I move”) encircling a central point symbolise motion. They emphasise the role of the Paralympic Movement in bringing athletes together from all corners of the world to compete.

Six months after the car accident that left Emma Booth a paraplegic, she had the courage to ride again.

From that point on, the 2016 Rio Paralympics became her goal. Finding the right horse in general is hard, but a Para dressage horse is so much harder. A horse for Para needs to be a great listener and responsive to voice commands rather than the usual physical aids.

Booth and her entourage travelled to Europe twice to find the right horse but came back empty handed on both occasions.

With the 2016 Paralympic trials only a month away and with all hope looking forlorn, the Victorian state dressage coach asked Booth to try a local horse named Zidane, a handsome 14yo Dutch Warmblood gelding.

“Two minutes into the ride I knew this was the one. We just clicked. He understood everything I asked of him straight away.”

The pair had such a bond that within three weeks they had managed to qualify for the Rio Paralympics. Booth just missed a place on the podium in Rio, finishing a close fifth, missing the bronze by only 0.8%.

Professor Ben Ahern and his team at the University of Queensland have developed a rapid (< 1 hour), point-of-care kit that can detect Hendra Virus.

The benefits of such a test are self-evident allowing horses with the wide variety of symptoms attributable to Hendra able to be rapidly screened for the virus in situ or at the point of care, reducing human exposure and the potential for further spread of the deadly virus to both humans and horses. Negative cases could then be rapidly triaged to treatment instead of waiting 24-72 hours for results to come back.

Of course, rapid screening is a bit like shutting the stable door after the horse has bottled and current Hendra vaccination remains the preferred option.

Following heat inactivation, samples are tested using a handy molecular diagnostics machine (
The Genie III is 250x165x85mm and weighs about 1.8kg. The instrument has been specifically developed for outdoor use and is weather-proof and portable with a rechargeable battery that will last all day. The same technology has also been used for COVID testing.

Pending final approval from the Queensland Chief Veterinary Officer, the Hendra Virus LAMP kits will soon be available for veterinarians to purchase.

Yankee Rose - From humble beginnings to international supermum

Randlab's Dr Michael Robinson was working as assistant trainer for David Vandyke when a diminutive black filly entered the stable in August 2015, beginning what has become an epic international journey.

I well remember the day that the diminutive black filly first walked into the stable. At barely 15.2hh, she was smaller than most, but walked with the confident swagger characteristic of many small horses.
I fondly remember she had only cost a mere $10,000 at the 2015 Inglis Classic Sale. An ordinary pedigree and her lack of size dictating her sale price.

Dr Dexter Kruger, veterinary surgeon and Australia’s oldest ever man has died peacefully at the age of 111 years and 188 days at his Roma nursing home. Dexter who worked as a cattle vet and grazier in the Maranoa region (Qld) worked until into his 90’s.

Dexter never actually studied veterinary science at University but was allowed to practice as a rural vet due to the shortage of veterinarians after WWII.

After surpassing the previous Australian record earlier this year, Dexter attributed his longevity to “living in the country, having a sense of humour and a positive outlook and eating chicken’s brains” (Ed: not sure if the latter was his sense of humour).

Dexter, who lived through the Spanish Flu pandemic, also offered some positive reassurance regarding Australia’s latest predicament, “We'll get through this virus thing. In my industry - the cattle industry - we had several big problems overcome with vaccines. We've exterminated many things with vaccines, and that will happen with this.”

Galileo: A Force Majeure No More

Galileo, the predominant thoroughbred stallion in Europe for the past twenty years and who was recently described as a force majeure, has been humanely euthanised at the age of 23 following complications stemming from chronic laminitis.

The 2001 English Derby winner went on to become a champion sire for his owners Coolmore Stud Ireland, where he recently set a record for siring the highest number (92 and still counting) of Group One races in history. In July 2000, at the age of 21, the stallion was still valued at €243.61M.

Amongst the many elite winners he sired was the unbeaten Frankel who remains the highest rated racehorse of all time and is now a successful stallion.

In 2008 Galileo survived two rounds of colic surgery in 48 hours.

The stallion stood in Australia from 2002-2007 but was never the dominant force in Australasia that he was in the Northern Hemisphere.

Trainer Aidan O’Brien who trained Galileo and over half of his stakes winning progeny said this of the stallion, "He was unique, and we will never see the like of him again. The determination he put into his stock was something else. That's what made him different. What he put into their minds, that genuineness, was out of this world."

On the day of his death, Galileo’s son Bolshoi Ballet won the Group 1 Belmont Derby for O’Brien and Coolmore in the USA.

When Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, passed away a few weeks ago, he was not only the longest serving royal consort, but also the longest serving President of the International Equestrian Federation (22 years) and one of the most influential figures in the history of equestrian sports.

The Prince’s equestrian interests were often overshadowed by those of The Queen’s, but Philip was equally as passionate about horses and widely respected for his equestrian knowledge and skills.

Throughout the 1940’s he was ranked in the top 10 British polo players and more recently he had competed at an international level at Carriage Driving: the sport that he was instrumental in transforming from a leisure activity to an FEI sanctioned competitive sport.

Current FEI President Ingmar De Vos said this of Prince Philip:
“His dedication to equestrian sports cannot be underestimated and will never be forgotten, especially in the Driving community. He was born in the same year the FEI was founded and sadly he will not be with us to celebrate his own and the FEI’s centenary this year.”

           Prince Philip competes at DrivingDressage.
Carriage Driving is best described as a three-day-event on wheels. It consists of three phases: dressage, cross country and obstacle driving. Carriage Driving became an official FEI discipline in 1970, largely due to the Prince's lobbying.

The Prince himself favoured four-in-hand driving and would go on to be a member of the Gold winning British team at the 1980 World Driving Championships. He ultimately represented Great Britain in no fewer than six World and three European Championships.

The Prince was also instrumental in the creation of the FEI World Equestrian Games, having lobbied for the competition for many years prior to the inaugural games being held in Stockholm in 1990.

His contribution was also pivotal in establishing the FEI Jumping Nations Cup series, the FEI Jumping World Cup and a number of international pony club initiatives.
The Prince excelled in four-in-hand international driving, and is credited with essentially creating the modern sport of combined driving, whilst president of the International Equestrian Federation. He represented Britain in three European and six World Championships, finishing sixth overall in the 1982 World Championships.

The Prince’s love of equestrian sports is shared by his son (Prince Charles) and daughter (Princess Anne) who represented England in Eventing at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. As did Anne’s daughter, Zara Phillips, who was part of the British Eventing Team that won the silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics. Amongst Prince Philip's many grandchildren that are involved in equestrian sports are Princes William & Harry, who are both keen polo players. His grand-daughter Lady Louise Windsor (daughter of Prince Edward) shared the Duke's love of competitive carriage driving and has inherited the Prince's team of four black Fell ponies and carriage, which formed part of the Prince's funeral cortege. . Daughter-in-law Camilla Parker Bowles is often described as resembling a horse.

A final salute to Redoute. An equine economy larger than a small nation's. The stallion reigned supreme from 2004 until he was humanely euthanised in 2019. The recent Inglis Easter Sale saw the last of his yearlings to be sold at public auction. The stallion is immortalised in a bronze statue which takes pride of place at Arrowfield Stud at Scone, where he stood for nearly 20 years.

The Inglis Easter sale also featured the last time progeny of the breed-shaping stallion Redoute’s Choice were offered for public auction. Ironically the last Redoute’s to go through the ring was Lot 418, a filly which also happened to be sold by Dr Padraig Kelly’s Fernrigg Farm. The filly brought $760K.
Redoutes has been described as an economy bigger than many small nations with an aggregate in service fees, sales figures, prizemoney, etc approaching $2 Billion. The stallion stood the majority of his stud career at Arrowfield Stud in Scone, whose director John Messara acknowledged the Stud’s success largely rode on the back of their foundation stallion.

But it seems that Bridget may have had some misgivings about selling. "I was a bit teary, we love the horses first and foremost and to have one that beautiful is amazing and to let her go is sad," she said. "But to see everyone appreciate her that much is amazing. The mare is literally the gift that keeps on giving and she is just incredible." You can watch an interview with an excited Bridget & James soon after the sale

Not to be outdone, Dr Padraig Kelly was also making Sales headlines. As well as running a busy practice, Padraig and his partner Rae-Louise own Fernrigg Farm in Denman and were responsible for selling a yearling that gained some notoriety in social media given that he was orphaned soon after birth.

The foal, known to stud staff as "Ronnie" was originally fostered onto another mare that had recently foaled down. The mare accepted Ronnie and managed to feed him along with her own foal for several weeks until an appropriate foster mare could be found. The two “stepbrothers”, both by Merchant Navy, eventually became great paddock mates before ending up as 'roomies' at the Inglis sale where Ronnie sold for $120K and his stepbrother for $300K.

How a blind girl and her horse plunged 16m daily into the Atlantic Ocean

In 1894 William “Doc” Carver, a Wild West sharpshooter and dentist (a combination that largely still exists today!) launched his latest idea for his travelling show at the famous Steel Pier at Atlantic City, New Jersey; High-diving Horses.

Legend would have it that the good Doc stumbled across the idea when a bridge he was riding over collapsed forcing him and his mount to plunge into the creek below.

High-diving Horses featured a bathing suit clad “diving beauty” who would perform a bare-back mount on to the moving horse on a raised platform 12-18 metres above the water before the horse plunged into the Atlantic Ocean with an almighty splash.

The most famous diving girl was 19yo Senora Webster, who was later to become Carver’s daughter-in-law. Senora had natural “star quality” but the horses were the real stars. They reportedly enjoyed their diving performances and no aids were used to force them to jump. Many of the horses would play to the crowd by either hesitating and bowing prior to jumping or remaining motionless in the water after landing before taking a massive leap into the air and bounding out of the pool.

The show became a major attraction in the popular resort city and continued to wow audiences for the next 50 years.

However, seven years after Senora started diving, she hit the water hard, detaching both retinas and became permanently blind. News of Senora’s blindness was not released to the public and she continued to dive for the next eleven years. She could tell by the sound of the horse’s hooves where the horse was, as it climbed the wooden gangway, performing a moving mount once the horse reached the top and just milliseconds before plummeting into the water below.

“Once you were on the horse, there really wasn’t much to do but hold on. The horse was in charge.” Senora was quoted after retiring from the show.

The show declined after WWII after growing concerns about animal cruelty began to surface and the last show at the Steel Pier was held in 1978.

In the 50 years that the act ran, only one horse is reported to have drowned and in a separate incident an 18yo rider was also killed. But injuries were uncommon.

In 1991 Disney made a movie based on Senora Webster’s life called “Wild Hearts Can’t Be Broken”.

It’s hard to sanction this activity, but none-the-less, Horse High-Diving is an interesting but little known part of equestrian history.

Physiology of the swimming horse

Swimming is a popular exercise in performance and pastime in leisure horses.

The physiology of the swimming horse has always fascinated me. May be not quite as much as the aerodynamics of how a 650kg warmblood manages to get off the ground let alone jump 2.0m. But fascinating all the same.

Swimming horses appear not to breathe for what seems like an eternity, then take a short maximal inspiration, followed by a prolonged period of apnoea before a final short explosive expiration.

Then they get out of the water, take one deep breath, snort and shake and their heart rate is back to normal. Swimming’s value as a cardiovascular conditioning exercise in the equine athlete would seem perhaps questionable, albeit it is a valuable training tool for many other reasons.

Back in 2019, Drs Cate Steel & Sue Jones (Melb Uni) and Sam Franklin (Adelaide Uni) were interested in the respiratory physiology of the swimming horse and wondered about the respiratory responses and the endoscopic appearances of the URT during swimming of the tethered horse.

So they called on the help of Randlab’s popular Vic/SA/Tas Territory Manager, Alex Macpherson. With a BSc and over 4000 facilitated gastroscopies under his belt, Alex knows his way around an endoscope and was up for the challenge.

Alex suggested that by using a piece of semi-rigid clear tubing to position the 3m endoscope in the upper airway, the video processor/light source could remain poolside and allow high quality dynamic videos of the swimming horse’s oropharynx and larynx to be recorded.

And so it proved to be.

The paper was published in the EVJ in 2019 and had many interesting findings including:

During the apnoea phase, all horses exhibited complete collapse of the URT including closure of the external nares, nasopharynx and rima glottidis (with bilateral adduction of the arytenoid cartilages and vocal folds). Two horses even exhibited epiglottic retroversion.

The locomotor-respiratory coupling seen during terrestrial exercise was not observed during swimming.

Post swim endoscopy revealed grade 1 EIPH in 2 of 10 horses.

The authors speculated that the reason for the apparent complete URT collapse associated with post inspiratory apnoea when swimming is unknown but may be to aid buoyancy or associated with the mammalian dive response – a survival reflex to preserve oxygen stores and prevent water entering the lungs.

In a ground-breaking decision late last year, the International Olympic Committee has announced that

break dancing will be an Olympic sport

at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games.

A strange choice? Maybe. But any stranger than equestrian sports which were re-introduced as an Olympic sport at the 2nd modern Olympics also held in Paris in 1900.

Equestrian sports such as chariot and ridden races had been part of the ancient Greco Olympics, but disappeared until they were re-introduced in 1900. Initially, only commissioned military officers were allowed to compete and the disciplines were Polo, Grand Prix Jumping, High Jump and Long Jump.

There were no equestrian sports held at the next two Olympics.

Equestrian sports reappeared at the 1912 games in Stockholm under the modern disciplines of dressage, eventing (which was originally a 5-day event and included a 55km endurance race) and showjumping. Showjumping (15 jumps) was also included as part of the pentathlon.

Hobbyhorse riding, the World's newest equestrian craze, is emerging from its underground stable to a competition arena near you.

Once only the domain of young Finnish girls, the hobbyhorse subculture is spreading throughout the world and attracting an increasingly older population of enthusiasts.

Of course, hobbyhorse riding is nothing new to Australians

renowned coach, Ms Helena (or is it really Kylie Minogue?), teach some enthusiastic young Aussie kids the finer points of hobbyhorse equitation.
Safer and cheaper than real horses and more interesting than pet rocks, these elaborately handcrafted hobbyhorses are competing in all the usual disciplines; dressage, show jumping, western riding, cross country, gymkhana games and of course show riding.

Hundreds of hobbyhorses of all breeds and disciplines are gathering for training days and competitions. Competitions and national championships have been held across Europe, the USA and
The hobbyhorses are treated like real animals, requiring all the same entrapments ("all the gear and no idea") of real equestrians.

The hobbyhorses even require vaccination. At a recent dressage competition, a veterinarian lectured participants on hobbyhorse vaccination schedules and warned them to “check that the eyes are clear and there is no nasal discharge.”

Champion international mare Goldikova, a winner of an unprecedented14 Group One races in her homeland France, England and the USA, died recently aged 16 years.

Goldikova is the only European-trained horse to have won more than 10 Group One races and the only horse to have won three Breeders' Cup Mile (USA) races.

Goldikova was trained throughout her career by French trainer Freddy Head who had this to say about his former champion mare. "She was a mare totally out of the normal run of things who had extraordinary physical attributes. She never had a day during her entire career when I had to stop with her; she was made of steel. She could take the training and the racing like very few horses can. She was exceptional.

Goldikova's legacy will live on through her image on the ubiquitous blue Gastropell Daily label.
